Our History
George Williams had a vision in 1844 that changed the world. Moving to London in 1841, he saw the need for a supportive community and founded the Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) to help young men maintain their self-respect and strengthen their faith. This idea quickly spread, reaching North America with the first YMCAs in Montreal and Boston. By 1854, the movement had grown to 36 associations with 14,000 members across the U.S. and Canada. Today, the Green Bay YMCA carries on this legacy, fostering community and personal growth for all.
Community Impact at the Greater Green Bay YMCA
For over 150 years, the Greater Green Bay YMCA has worked to strengthen our community, helping everyone reach their full potential. By uniting people of diverse backgrounds, the Y ensures access to resources, relationships, and opportunities.
We offer a place to play, learn, stay healthy, eat well, and give back. Through swim lessons, youth programs, childcare, camps, and more, there’s something for everyone. Together, we improve health, empower youth, and foster community connections.
